Probably one of Bulgaria's best kept secrets, naturally occuring thermal mineral pools, Bulgaria is actually ranked as the second in Europe after Iceland in terms of the existence of hot springs.
Located in Banya, just 12 km from Betolovo is a premier thermal spring destination featuring over 70 natural mineral springs, many are open to the public. Renowned for its healing waters which are typically rich in sulphur, sodium and fluorine, the village off hot mineral pools. These waters are suitable for relieving stress as well as the prevention and recovery of a variety of diseases, they are popular with skiers as an aid to reducing muscle tension after a day on the slopes.
The water is clean, ordourless and is good for drinking and has a temperature between 37C and 57C, when the water temperature in the pools is too high for bathing, it is regulated by adding cool fresh spring water from the same source. Interestingly Banya (баня) is the Bulgarian word for bath or bathroom.

There are two restored baths in Banya, Bulgarian and Turkish which add to the character of the village, there are museums to browse and several archeological sites in the village and its surrounding area.
The Old Turkish Bath (Muratina Bath): A classic 17th-century Ottoman public bath. It is located in the centre oof Banya, near the ancient Roman bath. Recently restored, it taps directly into the natural curative mineral waters.
The Old Bulgarian (Roman) Bath: Located just a few steps away from the Turkish bath. It features an ancient hypocaust heating system and is an excellent complement to a traditional steam bath or public bathing establishment.
