The origin of the name, Betolovo

Specific rural mountain localities such as Betolovo (or Betolovoto) do not have a single, definitive point of origin in historical records. Instead, linguists, regional historians and experts in the Slavic study of place names attribute its origin to this highly likely factor:

In the Bulgarian language the suffix -ovo is explicitly used to denote possession or association, it essentially translates to "the place belonging to..." or "the settlement of...".

The name Betolovo was created by adding the suffix -ovo to Betol, the name of its medieval leader or landowner. Through centuries of oral tradition, the area became officially known as Betolovo, which literally translates to "Betol's Estate" or "Betol's Place."

The Old Bulgarian names Beto or Betol were common shortened or affectionate forms of longer medieval Slavic names such as Berislav or Bratoslav.

Betolovo or Betolovoto

There are two different spellings for the area, Betolovo and Betolovoto but they refer to the exact same location. The variation exists simply because of Bulgarian grammar, this includes the Bulgarian definite article "-to" at the end of the place name, meaning "The Betolovo".
